1,174 of Boston’s 24,937 residents are described as “All other free persons except for Indians not taxed.” It is one of the largest populations of free blacks in the country. Most live in the West End or on the North Slope of Beacon Hill. The separate towns of Roxbury, Dorchester and Charlestown have an additional combined population of 7,863, with 144 classified as non-white.
